A hyperlocal, closed-community dating app. 100 paying users in month one. Shut down when the unit economics didn't work.
The context
I wanted to build something people would pay for from day one. So I did — a hyperlocal, closed-community dating app with a real subscription, not a free-tier dream.
What I built
100 paying users in the first month. Strong retention signals. A community that actually showed up. By every vanity metric, it was working.
What I learned
It was failing by the one metric that mattered: the unit economics never closed. Killing something that's 'working' is the hardest discipline in product. I shut it down. I'd make the same call again.
