You Can't Connect the Dots Looking Forward

Every system I've built that actually worked started as a mess I didn't fully understand. Clarity is something you earn on the way out, not something you start with.

People want the clean version of the story. The one where you saw the whole board and moved your pieces with intent. That version is mostly fiction.

The honest version

The honest version is that you take the next reasonable step. Then the next. You stay close to the problem, you keep your ego small enough to change your mind, and you pay attention to what the work is teaching you.

A hyperlocal dating app taught me unit economics. A no-code product taught me leverage. A bankruptcy taught me what actually matters when the spreadsheet stops being theoretical.

None of those felt like dots at the time. They felt like detours.

What I trust now

I trust process over prediction. I trust systems that survive contact with reality over plans that look elegant on a slide. And I trust that if you keep doing honest work, the pattern shows up eventually — usually right when you stop demanding that it does.

You can't connect the dots looking forward. You can only trust they'll connect later. So far, they have.
